Kernville, Ca at Lake Isabella

Entered Kern Canyon at 8am headed up to Kernville.

Kern Canyon is a narrow canyon North East of Bakersfield. The Kern River starts out as the southern drain for Mount Whitney, meanders over granite bolders in the Kern Canyon on it's way toward Buenea Vista Lake near Taft West of Bakersfield. The Kern River doesn't connect to the Pacific Ocean. The hills are yellow this time of year, and most of the rest of the year as well, dotted with the ocassional tree.

We're at 2,601 feet here by the river at a city park in Kernville rising from Bakersfield's 507 feet on some easy grades on the winding canyon road. It's 68 degrees here right now at 9:30 am.
This is a decision point. I have to decide wheather to go on the East or West side of the Serra Mountains. Decision, decisions! Right now I'll catch up on this blog and other business, watching the river flow by the green of the park, with the oak and cottonwood trees beyond.

East won. I headed East on Hughway 178 through some of the best Joshua Tree forests I've seen. Headed North on Highway 14 and 395 to Coso Junction. There is a nice rest stop here where I'll spend the night. The sun sank over the top of the mountains about 6:15 pm. The sky is clear, the mountains are shadowed like cardbord cutouts. Interesting lighting.
