Haines, Alaska

Friday: (09/02) Oatmeal yogurt and raisens for breakfast. Nice sunrise. A cool morning. There was some rain last night but not bad this morning. Spoke too soon though. We had extremely heavy fog most of the way down to Haines and rain in Haines. We checked in to the Hitch RV Park downtown. We also bought tickets for the last express ferry to Juneau for tomorrow. It's an all day trip by catamaran to Juneau with about three hours there.

We walked around downtown and tried to see the Hammer Museum but the proprietor was out to lunch. We checked back when the "will be back" sign said they would return but the door was still locked and the sign gone. It's end of season and there is no ship in port today so we assume he decided to take the day off.

Since it was raining we decided to take a drive around the area. We drove out to Chilkoot State Park where the bears are usually seen eating the salmon in the river. Not today though. We'll check back there later. We'll likely actually move out there in a couple of days. We also drove out to Chilkat State Park on the opposite side of town. Nice park where we got a glimpse of a couple of glaciers.

We stopped at the fair grounds at the Klondike Saloon for dinner. We enjoyed a chocolate dipped piece of peanut butter cheese cake then shared a huge sausage and pepper calzone. Time to prepare for our 0830 departure tomorrow now.
