Sturgis and Deadwood,SD

Toured Sturgis, SD. They’re preparing for the big biker rally. There are more vendor tents than brick stores. There are more bars than vendors.

We then went to Deadwood. It is now a little Reno but the village atmosphere remains. A nice place to visit but you wouldn’t want to live there.

We headed on to Devils Tower. We ran in to a deluge. It rained so hard we had to pull over when we found a wide spot in the road. Some water got through the windows. We spent a while drying out. We camped in the park for the night. We couldn’t get the refrigerator to stay on.

Mt Rushmore, SD

We left Comanche Park campground in Custer headed for Mt Rushmore. Boy has Mt Rushmore changed! It’s really been developed and now has a crowd to match. We then headed for Rapid City to get an Oil change and look around.

The Caves

We left hot springs and went to Wind Cave National Park, SD. We took a special tour of the cave with Dawn so she could see the formations. She really doesn’t like them normally due to the poor light, the distance to the formations and the steps. All those were handled by a very nice Ranger when he gave us the special tour.

We then went to The National Wood Carving Museum in Custer.

And finally Lou and Don took another Cave tour at Jewel Cave. We spent the night in a Forest Service Campground west of Custer.

Cooling It In Hot Springs

We played in the lake on a paddle boat and then went downtown to a great local history museum. This was an old three story school house that is now a museum. They were having a Pioneer Days event and the admission was free! There was an auction and crafts fair and great homemade food at the booths.

We took a walking tour of the downtown area. The Larive Lake RV Resort is quite nice. We lounged around by the lake later in the afternoon.

There is a nice little park along the river

Hot Springs, SD

We left Fort Robinson about noon. We Stopped at the Mammoth Site. This is a location where a lot of Columbian Mammoths fell in a sink hole. The site shows many in the quarry just as they were found.

There is an odd water fall downtown that seems to defy gravity.
