Ferndale Fairgrounds

We had a relaxing morning, why hurry. Lou baked an omelet. Since the oven was hot, I started baking a bunch of Italian sausage to freeze. They are easy to cook in the oven, no grease spatter like frying and easy to cleanup up after if you line the pan with tin foil. Good plan, bad result. The oven quit. The thermocouple failed again and it won't let the burner come on. So I did some frying.

Lou and Dawn dropped by the thrift store next door. Before we departed I looked around a nice outdoor shop, tried out a couple of kayaks for size and comfort then went by Autozone to pickup some black silicon caulk for one of the RV windows. The right front has a piece missing.


We stopped off for a break in Hopland. We tried to stop at the Solar Living Center but they aren't RV friendly so we parked in town and walked back. Not too far. It's a nice place to visit and has interesting products for alternate energy and alternate methods of living. Nice ponds and cool grounds are part of the Solar Living Center. They practice what the sell here. The whole place appears to be solar powered.

One of the ponds bull frogs peeks out on the left. There are also a lot of curious fish in the pond.


Now this is something you don't see every day. Also quite embarrassing to be passed by a wiener car.

We made our way North to Ferndale to the Humboldt Fairgrounds. We got all setup and relaxed a while before heading over to The Somoa Cookhouse, the last surviving lumbercamp cookhouse. Always good food. We have to make a special effort to control ourselves when we're in town. We have gotten carried away before and visited the cookhouse too often.

Tomorrow, we'll visit the Loleta Cheese Factory and Ferndale. Later, Eureka and Arcata.

Ukiah California Fairgrounds

We had a last (for a while) breakfast and tea in our backyard. We'll find many other nice "backyards" in our travels.

We moseyed North leaving home a bit after 11am. We stopped in Burlingame at Neal's Coffee Shop (1845 El Camino Real, Burlingame, CA, 94010) for breakfast. It's an old time like restaurant, the kind where you can watch the cooks, in an older strip mall. Always good.

We continued North on I280 (19th Avenue) through San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge and then North on Highway 101 to Ukiah. We stopped to look at the new, to us, TSC (Tractor Supply Company) store. We always find stores like this interesting. We really likes a similar store called Fisco in Bakersfield. We also had to look around at Freidman Brothers Building Supply. As you might deduce, we stop for all good hardware stores.


We then went over to the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds in Ukiah for the night. OK spot but since its after 6pm, it's time to settle down for the night.

Off We Go

We're ready to go tomorrow morning. It will be nice to be on the road again.

One last thing before we leave, we went by Verizon to get new phones. Our old ones were dusty so it was time for shiny new phones. Actually, we're interested in the GPS feature on the phone. Dawn can put that to good use. These also have cameras. No reason to miss a picture now. Of course, if the new features are used, they come with additional charges so we'll see what's really "needed".

Dawn's friends Dawn and Courtney left for their new home in Amherst, Massachusetts this morning. We all had a nice visit. We've known them from pre-school days at San Jose State University in San Jose, then Horace Mann School and later here in Palo Alto schools. They moved to downtown San Jose near us, then after we moved to Palo Alto, then moved nearby. I guess we'll have to look over their new home in Amherst to see if it's our turn to move by them. Not too likely though. Doesn't it get cold there?

Preparing To Leave

The RV needs the usual cleanup and prep to go. We ordered new windshield drapes. Hopefully, they'll arrive before we leave.
We might even think about where we'll be going, nah! As usual, just a general direction is all it takes. North.

We had a nice hot dog roast tonight over a campfire on the deck. In the fire pit of course, not a smoking deck.

Project Almost Finished

Well, the big distraction is finally finished, or at least finished enough to cover up.

Trench to sump near completion. That white sand in the bottom of the trench is more than 30" deep. On the right above is the sump where the pump is located.

When we return from the road in a few weeks from now, I still need to actually extend the pipe under the house foundation, about 2 feet. I also haven't done anything more on the sidewalk and won't be until we return. Oh boy! Something to look forward to. I don't know why, but every time I dig a hole, the dirt won't fit back in the hole. I still have to haul away a couple of more yards of dirt to actually be ready to go.

Pechetti Ranch

On the Fourth we took a walk at Pechetti Ranch, part of the Midpenensula Regional Open Space District above Cupertino.








There are a lot of peacocks at the ranch and a nice pond with baby froggies hopping all over. There is also a nice winery on the grounds.
