Union Landing SB, Westport, Ca

Sunday:

Another leisurely morning (seems to be a habit). We were moving on the road a little before 10am. First stop was Costco. I found a loose lug nut on the right rear tire so I stopped by for them to tighten it. The tires are about 90 days new. We were out in about 10 minutes all fixed up. While we were there, we picked up a package of our friends, the blue shop towels that we use for everything.

Next stop was Loleta to restocked our cheese supply. Then we stopped in Fortuna at a video store that Dawn wanted to visit. We also went by Safeway in the same shopping center.

Next stop, Scotia. On our last visit here we picked up a bunch of ham ends at $.69/lbs at the market there. It was great ham for everything from beans, to sandwiches, to steaks. Much cheaper than lunch meat. They still had it. Evidently they get it from their deli. When it starts to curve, they must trow it in a pile for sale in the market. Hey, a bargain is a bargain.

We finally actually left town heading South on Highway 101 to Highway 1 and the coast. When we got down off the mountain we came across Union Landing State Beach. It's on a short bluff with the waves coming right up to the base of the bluff. The camp sites are at the top of the bluff and Highway 1 is right on the other side. This is a primitive campground with no trees. It's a bit foggy now but probably about 65 degrees. Really nice.



Our campsite is quite nice here at Union Landing SB. Right over a nice beach. Access to walk on the beach is a little challenging though.

Monday:

We decided to stay another night. It's really nice here, nice ocean view and quite (little traffic). Breakfast was one of Lou's omelets and sliced apple. Night before last, Lou was in a cooking mood and prepared a nice strudel for desert, some spaghetti and sausages, and an omelet. That took the chill off the night and left us with several breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Isn't the microwave wonderful!

Our neighbors left and there was a nice smoldering log left in their fire pit. That log along with our half burnt log from last night made a nice morning fire in no time. It's still foggy, visibility about 1/2 a mile, so the fire seemed nice. It isn't good for our solar generation though.

Tuesday:


We got up at went out to the beach for a walk.



It's a nice beach just below our campsite but only accessable at low tide. We found some interesting polished shells and glass. We also found two waterfalls, eack about 30 feet.

Redwood Acres Fairground, Eureka

We made our way on to Eureka to Redwood Acres Fairgrounds. We weren't able to register because the host left for the day so we picked a spot and headed to the other fairgrounds in Ferndale. We had stayed there on our previous two visits last month but, of course with the fair there, there wouldn't be any RV camping there.

We made it to the fair a little before 11.


There were some intersting entertainment groups. We watched this western dance troup and the Kitchenaires band. We didn't want to miss an opportunity to see the Kitchenaires. They play kitchen implement instruments modified with kazoos, washtub bases, washboards, pan lids etc. Always fun to see.

We enjoyed seeing the handiwork (quilts, furniture, crafts, art, photography, etc.)of all the participants.

We especially enjoyed the duck races. The master of cerimonies is Robert Duck (his real name). Dawn got to race a duck named "Lord of The Wings"

Duck races are over in a flash. You can't blink. They are motivated to get to the finish line and a little swim and a snack.

The animals are a favorite as well. This alpaca llama, named Bibbidy-Bobbidy-Boo, is so cute. They had a table of little bowls of water with fushia blossoms. Really colorful.

On The Road South

A casual morning. We got on the road about 10am. We had to get a couple of things before we left. When I dumped the holding tanks, the cap broke, so I had to find another. It seemed like everyone was out of them until we found it at an RV dealer South of town.

We headed out. We stopped in Ophir at the Honey Bear to get more of their meats. Also had to stop in the Wadderburn Market, just North of Gold Beach, to get one of their outstanding blackberry pies. They are the best pies we've ever found. Had to get one for the road.

As we passed through Crescent City, we stopped at the Chart Room for dinner. We then continued on to Prairie Creek Redwoods State park to see if there was anything available. There wasn't, so we stopped at the picnic area and filled our water tank and departed. We stopped for the night at the rest-stop in Trinidad.

Tomorrow morning we'll head to Ferndale to the Humboldt County Fair.

Last Day In Coos Bay

We went North a few miles to Ten Mile Lakes. We looked around an RV Resort there. It's one of those membership or deeded lot places. The resort was OK but nothing special. The deeded lot area was way over crowded. Quite different from their webpages. A person would be better off just buying a house nearby. We did discover a nice county park next door. They're still finishing development but it will be nice.

We did the laundry near some nice shopping center in Coos Bay. We then dropped Dawn off in North Bend to look at the book stores there (three). Lou and I went to look at the local hardware and home improvement stores. At the first one, Dawn called and said she had meet the daughter of Lou's friend Connie there at the book store. Jessica is completing her bike ride back from Alaska. She and her friend stopped in for a cup of coffee at the bookstore. Odd where you meet friends


Our stay here at The Mill Casino has been a pleasant one. When we arrived, we checked on the price of the RV park. Since it was more than we wanted to pay, we asked about the free lot. The attendant said yes we could stay there for free. A couple of days later, we decided to move our RV to a different spot for a better view. A short time later a security guard on a bike came by. He mentioned that we needed to register in the office in order to stay here. So we did. Easy to do. After a couple of more days here we decided to stay another night. This time when we went in the office they mentioned that we could stay here for up to seven days in twenty-eight days. Interesting how the information trickles in. A good sign would seem beneficial. Anyway, another interesting thing to know if you plan to stay here in the free lot. You can dump in the RV park for about $10 but it only costs $1 at the city sanitary dump in downtown Coos Bay East of the visitor center across Northbound Hwy 101 less than a mile from the casino.

We head back South tomorrow morning.

Shore Acres Park

Shore Acres State Park West of Coos Bay Oregon.


The coast is quite interesting here.

In 1962 many trees were lost in a storm. This was probably one of them. The roots don't seem to penetrate the ground at all. This is a rocky cliff. Must be hard for the trees.


The garden at Shore Acres is very nice. There is no charge to enter the gardens but there is a $3 day use fee, per car, to enter the park.

Silver and Golden Falls

Silver and Golden Falls State Park is located about 24 miles East of Coos Bay. The first 19.5 miles are on a nice paved road. The last 3.5 miles are on gravel road which narrows to barely one lane in width near the end. There is a large parking area at the park so a trailer or toad could be brought in with no problem. There is no camping though.

On the way up and back we checked out two very nice county parks as possible future camping sites. One is located where the pavement ends and is very nice with most campsites along the river. The rate is $8 per night.

Cold Here

Today was just plain cold! It was overcast most of the day and was quite cold. We looked around old town Coos Bay. We then drove over to Charleston, Oregon, a fishing village West of Coos Bay. We intended to find a nice place to eat but didn't like the looks of any of the places in town.


We continued on to look at the state parks South of there toward Point Arago. Seals on the rocks near Pt Arago Oregon.
We returned to Coos Bay and had lunch. We topped off the day with a visit to Fred Meyers. An evening visit to our host's casino to try to loose a few bucks. Too bad, Dawn was a winner and we came out with a overall gain.
Tomorrow we'll visit Golden and Silver Falls. Always like to see waterfalls!
