Glenallen

Chorizo and Potatoes
Friday: (08/19) More chorizo potatoes with fried eggs for breakfast. We turned on to the Richardson Highway just a mile or so down the road (from Highway 2 onto Highway 4). The road follows the Tanana river through Fort Greeley and up through the Alaska mountain Range.

Richardson Highway South Of Delta Junction Flowers Along Richardson Highway
Richardson Highway South of Delta Junction. Some interesting flowers. We stopped along the way a few times for the views and to look at some beaver ponds.

Spam Beans And Corn With Onions And A Spinach Salad
Spinach salad and a spam beans, corn, onions, and tomato mixture for lunch overlooking the lake South of Paxon GPS:64.05319663,-145.73371671). While it was cloudy this morning we didn't get rain until we got up in the mountains and then only light showers. The weather report says we're headed down into a storm though. We fueled up and added LPG at the Southern Glen Highway junction in Glenallen then drove three miles back up the Richardson Highway to Dry Creek Campground SRA where we will be staying two nights while we explore the area. For dinner Lou made clam linguini with steamed broccoli. For desert we shared a cinnamon roll we had picked up at the Sourdough Lodge a few miles earlier.

Saturday: (08/20) Granola for breakfast. We drove down to Copper Center to look around.

Valdez Trail By Wrangel St Elias Visitor Center
On our way we stopped at the Wrangel St Elias Visitor Center to learn about what to do tomorrow on our trip to Kennicott. We took a short hike on the Valdez Trail (above) near the Visitor Center and watched the movie about the park. Then we drove the Copper Center Loop Road. Not much to see there. Most of the shops are already closed for the season.

Copper Center City Hall George i Ashby Museum, Copper Center
We did enjoy their City Hall and the George I Ashby Museum. Lou checked out a fabric shop next to the museum and they had some Alaskan themed fabric she's been looking for cheaper than she'd found it anywhere else. We finished up by noon and started back toward home much earlier than We had planned. We did stop along the way at the market in Glenallen for an emergency tea purchase. Lou and Dawn also examined the thrift shop next door. Leftovers for lunch at home. After lunch we hooked up the Jeep and left our camp even though we had planned on staying another night there. We decided, since we had finished in Glenallen so early, to drive on down to Chitina to a little campground by the Copper River. It's located a mile and a half beyond the end of the paved road. Tomorrow morning we'll head on down the gravel road 60 miles to Kennecott. I fixed spaghetti for dinner. We had a nice chat with a fellow camper who happened to be an anthropologist for the government in Fairbanks. It was interesting learning a little about his adventures in Alaska.
