Windwhistle CG, Canyon Rims Recreation Area, Utah

Tuesday: (04/23) We broke camp and drove up to Blanding stopping at the Laundromat. While I watched the laundry being done Lou made fried eggs with home fried potatoes and a little diced pork chop for breakfast. We finished the laundry and then stopped by the market and a general store next door. Our final stop was across the street at an RV park to take care our tank duty.

Then we hit the road North stopping for gas in Monicello before settling in to Windwhistle BLM campground about 22 miles North of Monticllo. It's in the Canyon Rims Recreation Area. The wind was fairly strong all the way up and it was cold. I had to change into my long pants again. I hate that. After we were settled the wind stopped and it warmed up to be a fairly nice day. We'll be here a couple of days to see this side of the Canyonlands National Park. For lunch we had more bean soup and toast. We relaxed at camp the rest of the day. Salmon, rice, and coleslaw for dinner.

We also took a jeep road out to the Canyonlands Overlook. We went out 5 or 6 miles to a point where the road got a little too severe for our intended trip today, Fortunately it was at a point were we got a good view of the canyons.

We also checked out the Hatch Point Campground. We might camp there on a future visit. The road out, while gravel and or dirt, is in real good condition and the campground is nice and there are several sites we could fit into. A nice campground to get away at.

Some of the canyon views are shown above. Note the dirt road in the photo on the left. That is Lockhart Basin Road which we will drive out tomorrow.

Claw-like Rock
On one of our stops I saw this rock that looks like a dogs paw. It is all naturally made.

Cows By Road Near Windwhistle CG  Windwhistle Nature Trail Views
The roads out to the overlooks go through open range and the biggest hazard is the occasional cow or calf along the way. Some are playful like the one play hide and seem above left. On the right above is a little nature trail by the campground which I hiked after we returned home. You can see the RVs in the campground in the center of the right photo as well.

Lunch was ham and cheese sandwiches and bananas. Lou made super chorizo nachos for dinner. The wind was gone today but we had some haze-like cloud cover that kept it a big cool most of the day.
