Cassiar Highway Disappointment

Wednesday: (09/07) We got an early start (0630) this morning planning on breakfast later. We didn't make it far before we notice a lot of people having a party at one of the rest stops. Just beyond the rest stop was a flagman that informed us the road was closed ahead due to three mud slides and probably would not be opened today. We returned to the rest stop and joined the party. (GPS:56.96639,-130.2481)Lou fixed biscuits and gravy for breakfast. Salmon tacos for lunch. We watched TV and I worked at the computer while Lou studied. While the rain was gone when we got up and it wasn't raining when we stopped later in the morning the rain returned so that will likely slow the re-opening. We're about 145 miles from Stewart  If we decide to go back and take Highway 97 it would be over 1000 miles to Stewart. So we will relax here and wait a while. It should open in a day or two. At 4pm we were advised that the road would not open until late Friday, at the earliest . There was a fourth mud slide while we were waiting. It was raining pretty good all day. Everyone was advised to turn around. So, our plans now do not include a visit to Stewart nor Hyder.

Cassiar Highway Devil Creek
We headed back toward the Alcan Highway.  We stopped for a look at Devil Creek.

Cassiar Road Closure Notice
We stopped at Dease lake to get gas and read this road closure notice.

Cassiar Highway Pine Tree Lake
We stopped at Pine Tree Lake for the night, just south of Mt Cassiar. We made 210 miles today, backtracking. We have 106 more miles to go to get back to the Alcan Highway. For dinner I had a ham and cheese sandwich as I drove. Lou had cottage cheese. We have a nice view of the lake tonight. We might try another early start tomorrow. Tomorrow we decide if we continue down to Highway 97 or just head on to Edmonton.
