Juneau, Alaska

Saturday: (09/03) We had leftover latkas with sausage for breakfast then drove down to the harbor to catch our ferry to Juneau at 08:30.

Pilots View On Haines To Juneau Ferry
Pilot's view from our ferry. We caught the Fjordland, a cameraman operated by Alaska Fjordlines aka Glen and Alison Jacobson. The ferry started in Skagway then stopped to pick us up in Haines and continued on to Juneau. Along the way our captain, Glen gave an excellent narrative about the islands, animals, etc. Our steward/deck hand Chris did an excellent job serving tea and muffins for breakfast on the way down and salmon chowder with dinner rolls and chocolate chip cookies for dinner on the return.

Juneau Red Dog Saloon In Juneau
Glen's brother Gary drove our bus from the harbor to downtown Juneau. Lou and I took a tour of the State Capitol building then walked around downtown. There really wasn't enough time to do much. Above are photos of downtown Juneau and the Red Dog Saloon.

Mendenhall Glacier At Juneau Glacier Ice In Lake At Juneau
We only had a two hour layover downtown before The bus took us out to the Mendenhall Glacier.   The icebergs in the lake below it are interesting.

Light house Seen On Haines To Juneau Ferry Ride Lighthouse Seen On Haines To Juneau Ferry Ride
A couple of lighthouses along the ferry route. The weather was rainy all day until we arrived back in Haines.

When we got back at 19:30 we drove out to the Chilkoot River. We were looking for bears and saw some, a mother Grisly bear with her four cubs. Unfortunately it was getting dark so the viewing didn't last. We'll be back tomorrow morning and hope to see her again.
