Cassiar Highway

Tuesday: (09/06) We were kind of slow getting going this morning. It was nearly 0930 before we pulled out. We stopped just before the Cassiar Highway turnoff to get gas. The Cassier Highway was nothing like we expected.

Cassiar Highway
The road was paved and in excellent condition. The first 10 miles or so were a bit rolly with short steep climbs and the same steep downhill runs. After that the grade improved and we were able to maintain about 50mph all the way today except for one other spot. There is a 7 mile 7% downgrade to the Stikine River and then a windy narrow and occasionally gravel climb up the valley on the other side. There was less than 1 mile of gravel road total today.

Cassiar Highway Jade City
We had a nice look around Jade City. I enjoyed looking at all their equipment. After that we stopped at a rest area . While I napped, Lou was studying our route. We had apples and peanut butter for lunch. We stopped for gas again at Dease lake. We saw little wildlife today. Only one black bear about km437. We drove through the Kinaskan Provincial Park looking for a campsite but it ended up with three strikes against it and that was enough. All their sites were back in, it was raining and there was no way to loop back through the park without unhooking. We continued on. We stopped a few miles down the road at the kM345.5 Rest Area for the night. Nice level pull through spot.

Shepards Pie
For dinner Lou made upside down Shepard's pie. We started the day with sunny mostly clear skies but it started to rain after we turned onto the Cassiar Highway and rained heavily all day. Nice brown flowing rivers near where we spent the night.
